What happens if all people become vegan, will have a negative effect on public health, according to a new study. According to data published by the American National Academy of Sciences, veganity at individual level is possible, but not for the society as a whole.
The researchers sought to study the impact of the meat industry on greenhouse gas emissions and wanted to know what would happen if all people were to adopt a vegetarian diet.
If all people become vegan
Scientists have found that if all animals are removed from the planet, the amount of food available to people will increase by 23%. This is because the beans currently used for animal feed can be consumed by humans.
This would lead to an increase in the supply of some important nutrients, including carbohydrates, honey, magnesium and cysteine. In fact, there will be more to the needs of the population.
However, the supply of some important nutrients that we now get from animal products will diminish, including calcium, vitamins A and D, B12, arachidonic, eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic fatty acids.
And some of these nutrients are associated with a reduced risk of heart disease, visual and cognitive development in infants and visual acuity.
Some of these nutrients can also be obtained from plants or supplements, but the quality supply of the vitamins and minerals needed by the body to gain and benefit is mainly due to the consumption of food.
Scientists recognize that healthy living in a vegan diet is possible on an individual level. But they think it will be difficult, even impossible, to spread across society.
The main reason for this is that not every organism is able to extract the necessary substances from plants and supplements.
Turning society into vegans will lead to many new diseases among the population, and even hunger and disturbances. Scientists recommend increasing the intake of plant products, but in no case avoid meat.
